1. Who we are

motorschap ("motorschap", "we", "us" or "our") operates the car search engine at motorschap.com. We index active vehicle listings published by dealerships across Kenya so that you can search all of them in one place. We are based in Nairobi, Kenya.

This policy explains what information we handle when you visit or use motorschap, why we handle it, and the choices and rights you have. It is written to be read alongside our Cookie Policy and Terms of Use.

For the purposes of the Data Protection Act, 2019 (Kenya), motorschap is the data controller for personal data processed through this website.

2. The short version

You do not need an account to use motorschap, and we do not ask you to register or log in.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use advertising or tracking cookies for third-party marketing.
Your saved cars, comparison list and search filters are stored only in your own browser. They are not sent to us.
We use Google Analytics (loaded through Google Tag Manager) to understand how the site is used, in aggregate.
Our servers keep standard technical logs to run the site securely and reliably.
Every listing links out to the dealer's own website. Once you contact a dealer, that dealer handles your information under its own policies, not ours.

3. Information we collect

Information you choose to give us

motorschap has no sign-up, no account and no on-site contact form. The only way you send information directly to us is by emailing an address such as info@motorschap.com. When you do, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write in the message. We use this only to respond to you and to keep a record of the correspondence.

Information collected automatically

Like almost any website, our servers automatically record technical information each time a page or image is requested. This typically includes your IP address, browser type and version, device and operating system, the page or file requested, the referring page, and the date and time. Images shown on listing pages are served through motorschap's own image proxy, so the same kind of request information is logged for those.

We use this data to operate and secure the service — for example to serve pages, balance load, detect and block abuse or automated scraping, diagnose faults, and understand overall traffic levels.

Analytics information

We use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to see how visitors use motorschap in aggregate: which pages and searches are popular, which listings are clicked, approximate location (usually at city or region level, derived from IP address), device and browser mix, and general journeys through the site. Google Analytics sets cookies and similar identifiers in your browser for this purpose. Where required, these are set only after you consent. See our Cookie Policy for the specific cookies and how to control them.

Some navigation links on motorschap carry short attribution parameters (for example from and pos) in the URL. These record which part of the page a click came from so we can measure what is useful. They do not identify you.

Information stored only in your browser

Features such as "Saved" cars and "Compare", along with your last used search filters and scroll position, are stored locally in your browser using localStorage and sessionStorage. This information stays on your device, is not transmitted to motorschap, and you can clear it at any time through your browser settings.

Information we do not collect

We do not collect account credentials or passwords, because there are no accounts.
We do not collect or process payment card or bank details. No money changes hands on motorschap.
We are not involved in, and do not receive, the messages or negotiations between you and a dealer once you leave our site.

4. Listing data from dealers

The core of motorschap is an index of vehicle listings that dealerships have already published on their own public websites. We collect the listing details (such as make, model, year, price, mileage, photos, description and the dealer's location and contact link) and keep them current.

This content is generally business information rather than personal data about you. Occasionally a dealer's published listing may contain a person's name or a direct phone number. Where that happens, we process it only as part of displaying and linking to the original listing. If you are a dealer, or a person named in a listing, and you want a listing corrected or removed, email info@motorschap.com and we will action reasonable requests promptly.

5. How and why we use information

We use the information described above to:

provide the search engine and its features, and serve listing pages and images;
keep the service secure, available and working — including preventing abuse, scraping and fraud;
understand and improve how motorschap is used;
respond to emails and other correspondence; and
comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, we rely on the following lawful bases:

Legitimate interests — running, securing and improving a free search service, and handling correspondence. We balance these interests against your rights and freedoms.
Consent — for analytics cookies and similar technologies, where consent is required. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose information to comply with the law.

6. Cookies and browser storage

motorschap uses a small number of cookies and browser storage items, mainly for analytics and to remember your on-site choices. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Full details, including a list of each cookie and how to disable them, are in our Cookie Policy.

We do not sell personal data. We share information only as follows:

Service providers that help us run the site — for example hosting and content-delivery providers, and Google (Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics). They may process data only on our instructions and for these purposes.
Legal and safety — where we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law, or is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of motorschap, our users or the public, or to investigate misuse of the service.
Business transfer — if motorschap or its assets are acquired by or merged with another organisation, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

When you click through to a dealer's website, that dealer is a separate and independent organisation. Any information you then provide to the dealer is governed by the dealer's own privacy practices, not this policy.

8. International transfers

Some of our service providers, including Google, process data on servers located outside Kenya. Where information is transferred outside Kenya, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is protected to a standard consistent with the Data Protection Act, 2019, including through the contractual and security commitments those providers make.

9. How long we keep information

Server and security logs are kept for a limited period needed for security, troubleshooting and abuse prevention, then deleted or anonymised.
Analytics data is retained according to the retention settings configured in Google Analytics; aggregated reports may be kept longer as they no longer identify individuals.
Email correspondence is kept for as long as needed to deal with your query and for a reasonable period afterwards for record-keeping.
Browser-stored data (saved cars, compare list, filters) remains until you clear it; we never receive it.

10. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access — including encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls and keeping our systems patched. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect the limited information we hold.

11. Your rights

Subject to the Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:

be informed about how your personal data is used (this policy);
access the personal data we hold about you;
ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
ask us to delete your personal data in certain circumstances;
object to, or ask us to restrict, certain processing;
withdraw consent where we rely on it; and
data portability where applicable.

To exercise any of these rights, email info@motorschap.com. We may need to verify your identity before we act. We will respond within the timeframes set by law.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) of Kenya — www.odpc.go.ke.

12. Children

motorschap is intended for people aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

13. Other websites

motorschap contains links to dealer websites and other third-party sites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes may be highlighted on the site. Continuing to use motorschap after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
